We flash back to Guts awakening at Godot's. OP: Tell Me Why (maybe they could use Penpals' alternate version of the song to show that things have changed) His brand bleeds, and he knows that he's found his next target. Upon entering the town, he spots the Count executing people. No Puck is necessary as he wouldn't add anything and would break the tone of the show (he wasn't even in the first episode). Guts then continues on his travels to the nearby town, in which ghosts follow him. This would establish Guts' new side better than the first episode did, and gives us some sweet, sweet Corkus vengeance. This scene is AWESOME and wouldn't take much to animate, especially with the cannon being just one still art frame, if the first episode was anything to go by. But it could be a more satisfying ending. It would also never satisfy anime-only watchers with a happy ending, as the whole show led up to Guts becoming the Black Swordsman, the lowest point of his life. So this will have to be as realistically cost-saving and compact as possible. I'm fully aware that the budget was low, and due to the manga being at about the Lost Children arc, there was never going to be a second season. This brings us the the hypothetical Episode 26. However, I know that it didn't really work for most people, and whilst I love it, it could be better. As well as that, I have the rare opinion that the series' controversial ending worked for me. One of the things that you may know from my profile is that I worship the 1997 series as the Holy Spirit, with Miura and the manga as God and Jesus respectively. Spoilers for Berserk 1997, The Black Swordsman Arc, and Cowboy Bebop, if you're into that.
